Glass Lantern

A refined, light-filled oak and glass addition that transforms the rear of a London terrace with quiet precision.

  • Architect: Studio Elephant
  • Photography: Chris Snook
  • Product: Vantage Classic Glazed Extension with Balcony Door

The Brief

Studio Elephant were tasked with adding a modest extension to the rear of a period home — a small intervention that could bring more light and openness to the dining space without overwhelming the existing architecture.

The Challenge

The result is a beautifully minimal Vantage Classic glazed extension, conceived as a finely detailed glass box with oak framing. Every junction is clean and deliberate: concealed brackets hide all fixings, keeping the structure visually effortless.

A balcony door with no external handle and a low threshold ensures seamless access to the garden while maintaining the purity of the design. The fully glazed roof floods the interior with daylight, amplifying the warmth of the oak joinery and creating a sense of openness far beyond its compact footprint.

The Outcome

Glass Lantern is a study in clarity and restraint — a small but transformative project where light, proportion, and craftsmanship work in perfect harmony. Since completion, it has inspired several new commissions, a testament to its quietly compelling design and timeless appeal.
